It's nicknamed the False Pass fishery.
But fishing in False Pass is nearly impossible.

Rumors abound about millionaire locals who fish here. But poverty rates in the communities that depend on this fishery are the highest in Southwest Alaska.

Its decried as an intercept fishery.
But all well-managed fisheries are intercept or what's called mixed stock fisheries, according to scientists. In fact, the salmon harvested here is so well-mixed that its impact on any single system around the world is nearly imperceptible.

The Area M sockeye salmon fishery may be one of Alaska's most misunderstood fisheries.

Few have visited this remote region. Many seem to have opinions about it. But those who live here share one sentiment.

“Sockeye salmon is our lifeblood,” said Aleutians East Borough Mayor Stanley Mack. “That's what it is. That's what it has been. That's what it will always be."
